Collaborative law a cost-cutting device for Illinois couples

Couples all across the United States have saving money in mind, and couples in Illinois are no different. Across America there is also a false assumption that divorce has to cost an arm and a leg. The truth is that this is entirely false, and we are not talking about a DIY divorce that often leaves both spouses financially exposed into the future.

There are other ways to keep divorce costs down whether money is tight or a couple simply appreciates a little fiscal conservation. Collaborative divorce is one of these options, but how does it save money and what can couples do to help?

The first obvious way that couples save money through a collaborative divorce is that it keeps the court costs down. Adversarial divorce involving numerous hearings and appearances can quickly add up. In a collaborative divorce, not only are meetings kept to a desired minimum, but they are on the couple's schedule as well.

Other ways in which a collaborative divorce can save money is to be able to share third-party costs, such as an accountant or even a therapist. It also allows for privacy while still having the protection of an attorney on both sides.

Couples can help the process by thinking about what they really want out of their divorce before beginning the process. In terms of the assets that they want, what is pulling them to the decision? Is it an emotional tie, a monetary one or even something else? Think about child custody and what kind of help a parent might want the otehr to provide.

There are many ways to save money during an Illinois divorce, and an attorney can help provide advice and protection along the way.
