High asset divorce of Neil Young and wife occurs after 36 years

Divorce is a hard life experience. It can teach you patience and how to stand up for yourself. It can also be exasperating because there is a judge involved who makes decisions about your assets and possibly about the custody arrangement of any children involved.

Illinois is a no-fault state that can allow a judge to grant a divorce with ease and doesn't require that fault lie with either party.

Neil Young, the famous singer/songwriter, is getting a divorce from his wife of almost 40 years. On July 29, 2014, he filed for divorce to end his 36-year marriage. His wife counterfiled her own request for a divorce on Aug. 12 when she answered his petition. A hearing is to be held on Dec. 12.

The 68-year-old Young, who is a former member of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, had a very successful career after the band broke up with his popular single, "Heart of Gold."

His 61-year-old wife is a musician whom Young had sing as a back-up vocalist in Young's Academy Awards rendition of "Philadelphia" in 1994.

She is also a singer in her own right, having written and released her own album. Young was inspired by her to write the songs called "Once and Angel" and "Such a Woman."

The two met in 1974 when Young's soon-to-be ex-wife was working as a waitress and was living in a teepee. They were married in 1977 and had a son a year later. The boy, who has cerebral palsy and is a quadriplegic, is the inspiration for his mother's charity work. She founded the Bridge School in Hillsborough, California. The school assists children with severe physical and speech disabilities to gain living skills and helps them become more independent.

The two also have a daughter together, who was born in 1984.

While it seems that the two are a match made in heaven, things have changed for them. This type of estrangement happens to the best of couples. If you find yourself becoming more and more distant from your spouse and are considering a divorce that has a property settlement involved, you may find a legal professional's advice helpful.
