Do half of all married couples in Pennsylvania separate?

Divorce presents numerous challenges to Illinois residents. Whether those challenges have to do with property division, real estate matters, child custody or child support, they will certainly be difficult to overcome. Even if the only major issue in a divorce is emotional aspects of separation, the emotional hardship is not something that anyone would ever wish upon another human being.

Considering the often-cited statistic that half of all marriages result in a divorce, this could be enough to discourage the average Illinois resident from ever getting married in the first place. However, some researchers are currently arguing that this figure is completely wrong. For example, new figures from the United States Census Bureau say that divorce rates have dropped dramatically in recent years and they are continuing to decline.

There are so many opinions floating around regarding divorce rates that it is difficult for a layperson -- or anyone for that matter -- to know the truth. Nevertheless, there is one thing we can be sure of: more couples are avoiding marriage, more individuals are waiting until they are older to get married, and more couples are simply living together without marriage. The average age for a woman to get married is currently 27, and the average age for a man to get married is 29. Also, a lot of people are having children without getting married.

Waiting until you are older to get married is probably a wise decision because older people who get married are far less likely to get a divorce than younger ones. However, choosing to never get married -- especially if there is a definite desire for children -- may not be the wisest choice. Indeed, Illinois residents should remember that there are numerous legal protections that come along with a marriage certificate and in the unfortunate event that a separation does occurred, not being married does not mean the separation will be any easier.
