Why collaborative law is a good idea

There's an old stereotype of divorce that's been perpetuated because of Hollywood movies and, well, real life. It's one of two spiteful former spouses who don't talk to one another and can barely deign to look upon their old partner. Their arms are crossed as they sit opposite one another at a big table, speaking only through their legal representatives as they hatefully hash out the details - how much they'll be required to pay, who gets custody and who gets the house.

The old guard is changing, though. The new idea is that you were once partners who shared everything in life and, as such, can still work together to reach an agreement without all the acrimony. That's the concept behind Collaborative Law - let's sit down, listen to each person's concerns and work productively toward a mutually beneficial and harmonious goal. If it doesn't work, you can still have the option of going the traditional route.

Collaborative divorces often involve financial specialists who help with property division, divorce coaches who can help each spouse keep perspective and child specialists who can help solve problems related to child support and child custody issues.

But what may be the biggest benefit of a collaborative divorce? With less attorneys and no litigation involved, it can be a much smoother and faster process. That's something you can both agree on.
