Therapy may help recovery after a divorce

For many people, seeking the help of a therapist or counselor during and after a divorce is helpful. Not only does it help spouses but also children of divorcing parents. When marriages fall apart, the damage caused can be significant regardless of the reason. However, for children of divorcing parents the damage and emotional toll can be catastrophic.

Depending on the outcome of your divorce and where you stand with insurance coverage, getting the help you need may be pricey. Some clinical psychologist can run into the low $200's hourly, and even with good coverage, deductibles and co-pays can add up. If you don't have the insurance details ironed out in your divorce settlement, you may end up footing the whole bill yourself.

Your child's school may offer some type of in-school therapy or counseling options. While this service is usually free, it may not have the impact your child needs to get them through this rough time. Finding an experienced therapist, skilled in working with children of divorce may be your best bet.

If you and your ex agree that it is in your child's best interests to meet with a counselor or therapists, splitting the out of pocket costs may not be that big of a deal. However, if you know during the divorce proceedings that you wish to get your children therapy, but your ex doesn't, see if your divorce attorney can help. A skilled divorce attorney will be able to address the family court with your concern and see that the cost gets added to your settlement.

Divorce is a difficult thing for children to go through. Finding them the help they need to cope is important. If you are concerned about your child's mental well-being during your divorce, speak to a trusted attorney.
