Avoid 'this' and do 'that': some tips for divorce

No legal process is ever as simple as it seems. When it comes to divorce, some people may think that ending a marriage should be relatively straightforward task. However, there are often many complications that need to be addressed and numerous issues and disagreements that need to be resolved before the divorce can be completed.

Throughout the divorce process, there will be moments and opportunities -- if you can call them that -- to make mistakes. Each spouse will need to carefully navigate their path through the divorce to ensure that it is done properly. But in addition, they also need to make sure that their interests are heard and that they are ready to do the same for their soon-to-be-ex. Fostering that collaborative and negotiable atmosphere during a divorce can make the process easier and less argumentative.

This is just one of many things you should do during a divorce. You should also be honest about your finances and assets. Lying about them can cost you after a divorce if your improprieties are discovered. Also, make sure you put your children first -- not just in the legalese of the divorce, but also outside of the legal conversation of your divorce. Talk with them, support them and help them during this difficult time.

There are also plenty of behaviors to avoid, such as moving to a different state or taking a new job. These can create complications during your divorce. You should also be prompt in responding to your spouse and any legal requests that are made.
